The Heart of Market Square l Late 1860s | Framed Canvas
This amazing image of vibrant and bustling Market Square was my favorite of a treasured batch of vintage "copy" negatives commissioned to save important, and rare plates. The array of merchant shops, wagons, vendors, central well/horse trough, and people throughout illustrate the sheer activity that powered this maritime city.
Likely taken from a 2nd floor window - this original was clearly a wet plate collodion plate given the abundance of blurred locals given the long exposure time required o
An incredible bygone view of Newburyport and its history. ❤️Canvas print set in black finish floating frame. Dimensions are 36" L x 24"H
About the NESB Negative Collection
We are passionately committed to preserving, and sharing, New England's amazing images and historic narratives. This commitment has been an active passion for decades and spans across all manner of regional artifacts. One area of this focus has been the preservation, cleaning (carefully) and digitization of historic glass negatives that are now being made into stunning prints that are exclusive to our shop.
In many ways we saw these wonderful and cultural captures as photographic orphans - disconnected from their original printed creation- often boxed in stacks and thrust into an inglorious attic or barn archive. The thrill is finding unique, interesting compositions that reflect the subtle, point in time activity, now lost or forgotten, of a bygone era.
