Norumbega Park & the Totem Pole Ballroom
Located in the Newton/Boston area (Auburndale on the Charles) Norumbega Park was a huge attraction for everyone. It included a theme park, various restaurants, gardens, an arcade, a zoo, and a theatre, but its biggest attraction was The Totem Pole Ballroom.
The ballroom was one of the biggest locations because of its reputation and its guests, such as Benny Goodman and the Dorsey Brothers, who performed there throughout the 1940’s where dancing and entertainment was a common similarity between patrons. Originally, the ballroom and the park were built to increase patronage and revenues on the streetcar line” but in 1897, it provided an attractive and entertaining destination for the people of the Boston area to explore outside the city.
Norumbega Park and the Totem Pole eventually fell into decline closing in 1964 & succumbing to fire. The location of the ballroom has been replaced by the Newton Marriot hotel - where evidence and ruins of the old park are still visible off the parking lot.
This design was sourced from promotional materials for the ballroom in the early 1940s. Even though the ballroom may be gone, its legacy still stands in history as a place where the music always lives in every generation and the fun never dies.
