NESB has partnered with Seafolk Studio to pay tribute to Boston's legendary disaster "The Great Molasses Flood" of 1919. We chose a candle to honor those lost & injured in this unbelievable catastrophe as well as reflect on the lore that the North End of Boston smelled of molasses for decades on. hot summer days.

Crafted in molasses style amber jars with black metal lids - this wonderful soy wax candle hints of orange, cardamom, sugar, nutmeg & wood. The label showcases a turn-of-the-century map of the North End.

The Great Molasses Flood was a disastrous event that occurred on January 15, 1919, in Boston’s North End. A massive storage tank owned by the Purity Distilling Company suddenly burst, releasing over two million gallons of molasses in a wave estimated at 25 feet high and moving at about 35 miles per hour. The sticky surge swept through the streets, destroying buildings, toppling elevated train tracks, and trapping people, horses, and vehicles in its path.

The disaster killed 21 people and injured around 150 others. Cleanup took months, as molasses coated streets, buildings, and even the harbor. Investigations later revealed that the tank had been poorly constructed and inadequately tested, leading to structural failure. The tragedy resulted in stricter building regulations and corporate accountability standards, marking a significant moment in U.S. industrial safety history.

If you wish to learn more about this astonishing event - we highly recommend securing a copy of "Dark Tide" by author Stephen Puleo available as a companion purchase at New England Sketch Book HERE
