The 1920s to the 1960s are considered the golden era of pictorial maps in America. Wildly popular, these maps highly creative, whimsical and detailed maps covered history, geography and culture and occupy a unique category in the evolution of cartography.

One important New England contributor to this field was the LeBaron-Bonney Company-founded by the Atheron Brothers, Lebaron and Jack in the 1930s and operated out of a number of Massachusetts Northshore communities such as Newburyport, Bradford, Haverhill and Amesbury. Jack was a profoundly talented designer & illustrator and created a number of area maps that reflect the distinct, playful and comprehensive style he infused into each illustrated work.

We have translated our deep affection for these fun and informative maps into high quality artisanal wood jigsaw puzzles for individuals and family alike.

This amazing LeBaron-Bonney example was published in 1938 and titled "The Map of Famous Pirates, Buccaneers, and Freebooters who roamed the seas during the seventeenth and sixteenth centuries." and provides a rich array of area narratives on the pirate exploits, hints of buried treasure, favored location, and insight on plundering characters from Blackbeard to Captain Kidd.

These pictorial map puzzles are exclusive to New England Sketch Book and only available through our onsite location in Newburyport or via our online shop.
