The Hilltop Steak House was the famed area restaurant located on Route 1 in Saugus. Founded in 1961 by Frank Giuffrida, a butcher from Lawrence MA, it was one of the busiest restaurants in the United States from the 1970s to 1990s.
Designed in 1966 by electric sign company Mack Advertising. A hole eight feet deep, 28 feet long, and 15 feet wide was blasted for the base of the sign. It took six flatbed trailers to haul the parts for the massive 67-foot sign, which contained 210 fluorescent light bulbs and nearly a half-mile of neon tubing, took five days to assemble.
