James Wallace Black was an early America photographer, inventor and pioneer of the craft. He is most well-known for the nation's first aerial wet plate image taken above Boston in 1860 from a hot air balloon (how he pulled this off still mystifies me) that introduced the concept of aerial reconnaissance for the military.
In addition - he captured iconic imagery of John Brown on the very year of Harpers Ferry and Walt Whitman when he was working with a local typesetter for the first printing of "Leaves of Grass".
His early logo and design are amongst my favorites and a must for any photography buffs.
We are committed to local production at NESB - so all of our shirts are designed & printed right down the road in Salem Massachusetts
