Caldwell's Rum
Reflecting New England's long-running obsession with rum. Caldwell's was the longest running rum distillery that was made on Newburyport's waterfront for 171 years. In 1790 - Newburyport alone had 70 rum distilleries, the year when Caldwell’s Newburyport Rum was founded.
Rum was a major business endeavor in colonial Massachusetts, mostly along the North Shore given the level of maritime commerce that drove the region and provided trade route ingredients for manufacture. Ships arrived regularly from the West Indies loaded with barrels of molasses destined for the many distilleries in Boston, Ipswich, Salem, Medford and Newburyport.
Founded by Alexander Caldwell (who was born in Litchfield, N.H., in 1746) the Caldwell Rum Co. aged its Newburyport rum in barrels, which gave it a butterscotch aroma that was made available in thick glass bottles that were eventually embossed with a trademark three-masted schooner.
