Bossy Gillis

Colorful, combative, and beloved & despised with equal vigor - Andrew Jackson "Bossy" Gillis (1896-1965) was a legendary personality of Newburyport. 

Called the two-fisted mayor - Gillis served 6 terms as mayor (with 20 total attempts), had numerous run ins with the law, served time, and was a nationally known figure in the same era of other fiery local politicians like James Michael Curley. (the Last Hurrah)

His gas stations were his podium, his office & his social center. His signage was as much a name plate on one's company door as it was to advertise his services.  This t-shirt recreates the design of his Market Square station in all its deco glory.
