Throughout our shop, we have sprinkled select antiques that reflect interesting regional narratives or art pieces from NE manufacturers & individuals that are, quite simply, beautiful and reflect a period style. This 6" flower tile from J. & J. G. Low is such a piece.
The J.G. & J.F. Tile Works was founded by John Gardner Low, with his father John Low, in Chelsea, Massachusetts, in 1878, and they were among the most innovative and important tile producers during the Aesthetic Movement in America.
The products of the Low Tile Works during the 1880s received important critical evaluation both in the United States and abroad. They exhibited them and were awarded medals for their glazed tiles at international exhibitions in London, Paris, and Barcelona.
Besides being so stunning, I believe this tile was excess stock from an 1880s installation because there rear of the tile is pristine. No remnants of mortar or marks of any kind outside of normal wear after being around for 140 years.
